Hace 3 días · When their father and elder brother Edmund, Earl of Rutland, were killed at the Battle of Wakefield on 30 December 1460, Richard and George were sent by their mother to the Low Countries. They returned to England following the defeat of the Lancastrians at the Battle of Towton.

Consequently, Richard’s future at first was decidedly unpromising. During Richard’s youth, York initiated the opening stages of the Wars of the Roses.

The Duke of York killed at Wakefield--a battle he should never have fought--and his son, Edmund, Earl of Rutland, just 17, trapped on a bridge while fleeing the battle and captured then stabbed to death there by Lord Clifford, apparently in revenge for York killing Clifford's father.

He was put forward as a claimant to the throne by the Earl of Warwick and marched to intercept a Lancastrian force that was marching to London.

Unfortunately Clifford was set on obtaining revenge against the Duke of York for killing his father at the First Battle of St. Albans, an event depicted in the penultimate scene of 'Henry VI, Part 2'.
