Edmund Ironside ( c. 990 – 30 November 1016; Old English: Ēadmund, Old Norse: Játmundr, Latin: Edmundus; sometimes also known as Edmund II [a]) was King of the English from 23 April to 30 November 1016. [1] . He was the son of King Æthelred the Unready and his first wife, Ælfgifu of York.

Ætheling (/ ˈ æ θ əl ɪ ŋ /; also spelt aetheling, atheling or etheling) was an Old English term (æþeling) used in Anglo-Saxon England to designate princes of the royal dynasty who were eligible for the kingship.
It is my purpose in the present paper to discuss the position of the ætheling in matters of royal succession during the Anglo-Saxon period. Consideration of the relevance of these findings to Welsh history and law will be reserved for an article to be published elsewhere.
