Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby PC (1 September 1752 O.S. – 21 October 1834), usually styled Lord Stanley from 1771 to 1776, was a British peer and politician of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Two of the British classic horse races still commemorate that passion – the Epsom Derby, named after him, and the Epsom Oaks, named after his hunting lodge, The Oaks, where both races were conceived.

As Edward Smith-Stanley, the 12th Earl of Derby, dined with friends one evening in 1779 at his home near to Epsom Downs, the conversation turned to horse racing. Little might he have imagined that he and his racing acquaintances were about to establish one of the most famous horse races in the world – the Epsom Derby.
