Edward Stanley Nacido en Knowsley Hall, la residencia ancestral de su familia en Lancashire, fue el hijo de Edward Smith-Stanley, 13º conde de Derby y Charlotte Margaret Hornby. Su padre, reconocido por su actividad como político y naturalista, heredó el título de conde de Derby en 1834 y desde entonces el joven Smith-Stanley fue conocido por el título de cortesía de Lord Stanley.

Edward Stanley was born in 1799. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford (though did not earn a degree).
