The only surviving son of Henry VIII by his third wife, Jane Seymour, Edward was the first English monarch to be raised as a Protestant. During his reign, the realm was governed by a regency council because Edward never reached maturity.

The familiar cylindrical design was introduced in 1879, and the inscription ‘POST OFFICE’ was added to the boxes in 1887. Upon the death of his father, Henry was crowned on 24 June 1509 he was just 17 years old. He immediately set about marrying his elder brother’s wife, Catherine of Aragon.
