In this "elegy," the Russian director Alexandr Sokurov, especially known such as feature films like Russian Ark (2002) and The Sun (2005), portrays the most famous couple in Russian classical music: 80-year-old opera singer Galina Pavlovna Vishnevskaya and 79-year-old cellist, pianist and conductor Mstislav Leopoldovich Rostropovich.
Aleksandr Sokurov’s stately documentary Elegy of Life details the career of Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and his wife, the singer Galina Vishnevskaya. Rostropovich passed away in 2007, a year after the documentary was completed, adding poignancy to Sokurov’s adoring film.
