Eleonor de Vermandois era hija de Raúl I, conde de Vermandois y de Valois, y de Petronila de Aquitania. Tras la muerte de su hermana Isabel de Vermandois (1183), su cuñado Felipe de Alsacia conservó los condados de Vermandois y de Valois, que, finalmente, tuvo que ceder a Felipe Augusto en 1185.
La muerte de su esposa Isabel (1182) complicó mucho más la situación debido a que Eleonor de Vermandois, hermana de Isabel, que testó a favor del rey, reclamaba su herencia. La lucha contra Francia empezó en 1180, devastando Picardía y el Norte de la Isla de Francia .
