The Pragmatic Sanction of 1713 was an attempt by Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI to circumvent longstanding law in order to have his daughter succeed him on the imperial throne. It worked but only after a long period of strife. Charles VI and Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel had married in 1708.
