  2. Biography. Second daughter of Charles Spencer, Duke of Marlborough; 1756 married Henry Herbert, 10th Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery; not to be confused with her daughter-in-law Lady Elizabeth Herbert (c.1765-1793; q.q.v.)

  3. Lady Elizabeth Spencer (1737-1831), later the Countess of Pembroke and Montgomery, was born the child of a duke and a baron's daughter. She married at 19 to noted cavalry officer and nobleman Henry Herbert, the 10th Earl of Pembroke and the 7th Earl of Montgomery, and had two children by him.

  4. Army officer; son of Henry Herbert, 9th Earl; married Lady Elizabeth Spencer (Elizabeth Herbert, Countess of Pembroke and Montgomery) in 1756.

  5. 1st wife of Lord George Augustus Herbert, 11th Earl of Pembroke and 8th Earl of Montgomery (q.v.); died after childbirth one year before her husband became Lord Pembroke in 1794; daughter of Topham and Lady Diana Beauclerk; not to be confused with her mother-in-law Elizabeth Herbert (1737-1831), Countess of Pembroke and Montgomery.

  6. Mary Sidney Herbert, the first English woman to achieve a significant literary reputation, is celebrated for her patronage, for her translations, for her original poems praising Queen Elizabeth and her brother Philip, and especially for her metrical paraphrase of the biblical Psalms.
