William Lewis Herndon, born 25 October 1814,Fredericksburg,Virginia; naval officer; died 12 September 1857, Atlantic Ocean, off Cape Hatteras,North Carolina in a shipwreck. Son of a banker, Herndon joined the United States Navy as a teenager, and was made an acting midshipman in 1819.
