Mehemet Emin Pasha was born Isaak Eduard Schnitzer on 28 March 1840 in Silesia, into a middle-class German Jewish family . He qualifying as a physician in 1864, but was disqualified from practice in Germany and moved to Constantinople.
The Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, led by Henry Morton Stanley, was one of the best-equipped ever to go to Africa. Strangely, rather than go the direct route from the East Africa coast, Stanley undertook to rescue Emin by going up the Congo River and then through the Ituri Forest, an extraordinarily difficult route that resulted in the loss of two-thirds of the expedition.

Emin var fast bestemt på å bli i Ekvatorialprovinsen, men brevene hans vakte oppstyr i Europa, særlig etter Gordons død. Det ble derfor igangsatt en redningsaksjon for Emin Pasha, ledet av Henry Morton Stanley. Ekspedisjonen la ut fra Zanzibar tidlig i 1887 og reiste via Cape Town med dampbåt til Vest-Afrika.
