Biography Officer; although of noble birth he served in the revolutionary and in the napoleonic armies; he was made Count of the Empire in 1808; during the Hundred Days he sided with Napoleon and was made marshal of France and Peer of France; he missed the battle of Waterloo when he persisted in pursuing retreating Prussian troops towards Wavre instead of rallying Napoleon's army at Waterloo.
Grouchy, though, was not defeated. He kept his force together and retreated in good order back to France. Many have accused Grouchy of intentionally holding back his men and not marching to join Napoleon when the sound of the gunfire at Waterloo could clearly be heard, and he has been widely blamed for Napoleon s defeat.

Emmanuel de Grouchy, 2ème Marquis de Grouchy ([ɛ.ma.nɥɛl də ɡʁu.ʃi]; 23 October 1766 – 29 May 1847) was a French general and marshal.
