År 1984 fick han i uppdrag av hovstaten att göra ett officiellt porträtt av svenska kungafamiljen. Tavlan avtäcktes på Gripsholms slott 1985. Färdigställandet av målningen dokumenterades av filmaren Håkan Wretljung i filmen Kungamålaren – ett porträtt av John-E Franzén .

About the Swedish artist John-Erik Franzén and his work, play and operation to portray the Swedish Royal family in 1984-85. In the 1960s he visited the United States for a long period and painted such works as Hell’s Angels of Los Angeles, CA, Dough’s Place and Cadillac Eldorado (1966).
