According to Wikipedia, Germany is a "Federal parliamentary republic". However I would revise this to "Federal multiheaded presidential republic (mostly)". Why? Because most federal laws aren't executed by the federal government, they are executed by the states. Police, the courts, prisons, etc. are all state responsibilities.

Germany was formed from an earlier collection of several states, so it has a federal constitution, and the constituent states retain some sovereignty.

The democratic FRG embedded itself in key western economic and security organizations, including the EC (now the EU) and NATO, while the communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact.
