Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated on 28 June 1914 by Bosnian Serb student Gavrilo Princip.

Her father was the third son of Edward, King of Portugal, while her mother was a granddaughter of King John I of Portugal through his fourth son.

The House of Este became extinct in 1803 when Ercole III died. Ercole's daughter Maria Beatrice and her husband Archduke Ferdinand Karl of Austria-Este's eldest son and so the successor to the duchy was Ferdinand.
