Ferdinand Freiherr von Richthofen (Pokój, 5 de mayo de 1833 - Berlín, 6 de octubre de 1905), también conocido como el Barón von Richthofen, fue un geógrafo y geólogo alemán. Su nombre completo es Paul Wilhelm Ferdinand von Richthofen. Richthofen nació en Carlsruhe in Oberschlesien (Silesia, actualmente en Polonia) y estudió en Berlín.

He also helped establish the science of geomorphology, the branch of geology that deals with land and submarine.

Ferdinand Freiherr von Richthofen (Pokój, 5 de mayo de 1833 - Berlín, 6 de octubre de 1905), también conocido como el Barón von Richthofen, fue un geógrafo y geólogo alemán. Su nombre completo es Paul Wilhelm Ferdinand von Richthofen.
Profesor de geología en la Universidad Humboldt de Berlín de 1875 a 1877, en la Universidad de Bonn hasta 1883, profesor de geografía en Leipzig de 1883 a 1886, y de nuevo en Berlín desde 1886. Realizó expediciones geológicas al este de Asia y a California, en Estados Unidos (1860-1868), donde descubrió oro.
As one of the founders (with Albrecht Penck) of the science of geomorphology ( q.v. ), Baron Ferdinand Von Richthofen was instrumental in making that discipline a permanent branch of geography in Europe ( Hettner, 1906 ); in contrast, in the United States it became part of geology in most teaching institutions.
