François Joseph de Lorraine (28 August 1670 – 16 March 1675), Duke of Guise, Duke of Alençon and Duke of Angoulême, was the only son of Louis Joseph de Lorraine, Duke of Guise and Élisabeth Marguerite d'Orléans, suo jure duchess of Alençon.

In 1527 Francis rewarded Claude for his loyalty and military service by naming him the first duke of Guise. When Claude died in 1550, his title went to his son François, a friend and military companion of the French king Henry II. François married Anne d'Este, a member of the ruling Este family of Ferrara, Italy.
François de Lorraine, 2e duc de Guise was a French soldier and loyal servant to the French crown, the greatest figure produced by the House of Guise. He fought in Francis I’s army and was badly wounded at the siege of Boulogne (1545), earning him the nickname “the Scarred.”

She and the young widow fought over who would be guardian of the late Duke's little son, François Joseph, the last male of the House of Guise. Marie de Lorraine won the battle, but her guardianship was short-lived. The little boy died in 1675.
