Prince Albert was born on 26 August 1819 at Schloss Rosenau, near Coburg, Germany, the second son of Ernest III, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, and his first wife, Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. His first cousin and future wife, Victoria , had been born earlier in the same year with the assistance of the same midwife, Charlotte von Siebold . [3]

John Ernest IV (German: Johann Ernst; 22 August 1658 in Gotha – 17 February 1729 in Saalfeld) was a reigning duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. Life [ edit ] He was the tenth but seventh surviving son of Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Gotha and Elisabeth Sophie of Saxe-Altenburg .
Essex's enamel is after a pastel by Johann Heinrich Schröder (1757 – 1812), part of a set of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and his family, at Schloss Callenburg, Coburg. An oil copy was painted by Herbert Luther Smith in 1844 for Queen Victoria (406214), but Essex's copy clearly pre-dates this.
John Ernest married Catherine of Brunswick-Grubenhagen, daughter of Philip I, Duke of Brunswick-Grubenhagen, but the marriage was childless. After his death in Coburg, the city fell for a few months to John Frederick — released from the imperial detention — before his death, and then, to his three sons, which governed the Ernestine lands together from 1554 for some years.
His reign as Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld began following his father’s death in 1806, and after a territorial rearrangement in 1826, he became the first Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He served as a Prussian general and fought against Napoleon in several battles, including Lützen, Leipzig, and the siege of Mainz.
