This miniature is one of William Grimaldi’s (1751-1830) copies of John Hoppner’s full-length portrait painted for the duke of Bedford and still at Woburn Abbey. Another is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 405408).
Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford, KG ( c. 1527 – 28 July 1585) of Chenies in Buckinghamshire and of Bedford House in Exeter, Devon, was an English nobleman, soldier, and politician. He was a godfather to the Devon-born sailor Sir Francis Drake. He served as Lord Lieutenant of Devon (1584-5).

The 5th Earl of Bedford (1613-1700) was created Duke of Bedford in 1694. His eldest son William, Lord Russell (1639-83), married in 1669 Lady Rachel Wriothesley, daughter and co-heir of the 4th Earl of Southampton, through whom the Bloomsbury (Middlesex) estate and land in Hampshire (Stratton, Micheldever, etc) came to the Russell family.
