Frederick Howard Carlisle, 5th earl of, 1748–1825, British statesman. A member of the distinguished Howard family, he went to the American colonies on an unsuccessful peace mission (1778) and served (1780–82) as lord lieutenant of Ireland.
Howard, Frederick (1748–1825), 5th earl of Carlisle and lord lieutenant of Ireland, was born 28 May 1748, the youngest, but only surviving, son of Henry Howard, 4th earl of Carlisle, and his second wife, Isabella, daughter of Baron Byron of Rochdale.
She was Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria and an active Whig in society circles. The Hon. Geoffrey William Algernon Howard, fifth son of the ninth Earl, was a Liberal Member of Parliament. His second son was George Howard, Baron Howard of Henderskelfe .
