In 1544, the so-called "one-third duchy" was ceded to Adolf, third son of King Frederick I of Denmark and the youngest half-brother of King Christian III of Denmark. Thus, the surviving House of Holstein-Gottorp is a cadet branch of the House of Oldenburg.
In 1474, Lauenburg's liege lord Emperor Frederick III elevated Christian as Count of Holstein-Rendsburg to Duke of Holstein, thus becoming an immediate imperial vassal (see imperial immediacy ). The smaller Holstein-Pinneberg remained a county further ruled by the House of Schauenburg.

Frederick II, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp (April 21, 1568 - June 15, 1587) was a Danish-German nobleman. He was the eldest son of Duke Adolf of Holstein-Gottorp and his wife Christine von Hesse (1543-1604).
The underage Frederick was elected co-Duke of Schleswig and Holstein in 1482, soon after the death of his father, the other co-duke being his ten years elder brother Johann (or Hans), the King. At Frederick's majority in 1490 both duchies were divided between the brothers.
