He was the second son of Sir Thomas Robinson 2nd Baron Grantham, PC MP and his wife, Lady Mary Jemima Yorke who was the daughter of Lord Philip Yorke 2nd Earl of Hardwicke and Lady Jemima Campbell Marchioness Grey.

He was educated at Sunbury; between 1796 and 1799 he attended Harrow and then he was admitted to St. John's College, Cambridge.
