Frederick I (7 October 1471 – 10 April 1533) was the king of Denmark and Norway. His name is also spelled Frederik in Danish and Norwegian , Friedrich in German and Fredrik in Swedish . He was the last Roman Catholic monarch to reign over Denmark and Norway, when subsequent monarchs embraced Lutheranism after the Protestant Reformation .
Frederick was born on 31 March 1723 at Copenhagen Castle. He was the grandson of King Frederick IV of Denmark and the son of Crown Prince Christian and Sophie Magdalene of Brandenburg-Kulmbach. On 12 October 1730, King Frederick IV died and Frederick's father ascended the throne as King Christian VI. Frederick himself became Crown Prince.

Frederick’s decree of March 30, 1863, appeared to confirm Holstein’s separation: it allowed legislation enacted for the whole monarchy to be valid for Denmark and Schleswig but subject to veto within Holstein. The German Confederation asked Denmark to withdraw the March decree, but many developments encouraged Danish resistance.
