Hace 2 días · The grand duchy originally formed from the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1806 as the Grand Duchy of Hesse (German: Großherzogtum Hessen ). It assumed the name Hesse und bei Rhein in 1816 to distinguish itself from the Electorate of Hesse, which had formed from neighbouring Hesse-Kassel.

23 de abr. de 2024 · The first grand duchy of western Europe was that of Tuscany, the title of grand duke being accorded by Pope Pius V to Cosimo de’ Medici in 1569 and recognized, for Cosimo’s son Francesco, by the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II in 1575. The title passed with Tuscany to the house of Habsburg-Lorraine in the 18th century.
