    Charlotte was the only surviving child of the last Count of Hanau, Johann Reinhard III, and the Countess Dorothea Friederike of Brandenburg-Ansbach. Thus, she was the sole heir of the County of Hanau.

  6. On 22 May 1782, Friederike aged 4 lost her mother who died three days after giving birth to a daughter, Auguste Albertine, who would only live for one day. Following the death of her mother Friederike and her family moved out of the Old Palace and into Schloss Herrenhausen.
