Ihr Stifter war Markgraf Friedrich der Streitbare, der 1423 mit dem Herzogtum Sachsen belehnt wurde und damit auch die Kurwürde erhielt. In der Begräbniskapelle der Wettiner wurden bis 1539 die Kurfürsten und Herzöge von Sachsen beigesetzt.
