He was the son of admiral and WWI hero Costanzo Ciano (for which service he was given the title of Count by Victor Emmanuel III) and his wife Carolina Pini. His father, nicknamed Ganascia (“The Jaw”) was a founding member of the PNF and reorganized the Italian merchant navy in the 1920s.
