Contents. 2010 United Kingdom general election. The 2010 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 6 May 2010, with 45,597,461 registered voters [1] entitled to vote to elect members to the House of Commons. The election took place in 650 constituencies [note 2] across the United Kingdom under the first-past-the-post system.
After further government defeats, a general election was held in December 2019 - the first December election since 1923 - which resulted in an 80-seat majority for the Conservatives, gaining many seats which Labour had held since at least 1945.
