George Capel-Coningsby, 5th Earl of Essex FSA (13 November 1757 – 23 April 1839) was an English aristocrat and politician, and styled Viscount Malden until 1799. His surname was Capell until 1781.

George Capell-Coningsby, 5th Earl of Essex. (1757-1839), Lord-Lieutenant of Hereford. Regency Portraits Catalogue Entry. Sitter in 7 portraits. Essex owned Landseer's The Cat's Claw (1824), a violent picture of a monkey burning a cat on a stove. Despite this patronage, Landseer does not hesitate to mock the Earl's girth and baldness.
