George Frederick Stanley, the 7th child and the 5th surviving son of the 16th Earl and Countess, was dressed as the Roman god Mars. Lafayette's portrait (right) of "Sir George Frederick Stanley as Maro [sic] (period of Louis XVI)" in costume is #101 in the album presented to the Duchess of Devonshire and now in the National Portrait Gallery.

George Frederick Stanley was born on 14 October 1872 as the 6th son of Frederick Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby. He completed his education from Wellington and later studied at Woolwich.
