Trayectoria militar. Comenzó su carrera en el mar a la edad de diez años. En 1740 la armada inglesa lo envió -junto a George Anson- a realizar un viaje de circunnavegación, en el que estuvo a punto de perder la vida en la toma de Paita, el 13 de noviembre de 1741. En 1742 fue ascendido a teniente, y en 1744 a capitán, y a comandante.
