George Savile, 1st Marquess of Halifax, PC, DL, FRS (11 November 1633 – 5 April 1695), was an English statesman, writer, and politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1660, and in the House of Lords after he was raised to the peerage in 1668. Background and early life, 1633–1667.

1 de abr. de 2024 · George Savile, 1st marquess of Halifax (born Nov. 11, 1633, Thornhill, Yorkshire, Eng.—died April 5, 1695, London) was an English statesman and political writer known as “The Trimmer” because of his moderating position in the fierce party struggles of his day.
The title Marquess of Halifax was created in the Peerage of England in 1682 for the George Savile, 1st Earl of Halifax . He had previously been created Baron Savile, of Elland in the County of York, Viscount Halifax in 1668, and Earl of Halifax in 1679, all also in the Peerage of England.

Halifax both epitomized and advocated the ‘middle path’ in politics (‘the Trimmer’), but in the shifting partisan atmosphere of the post-Restoration era he was regarded as an oddity, with whom few politicians could work easily.
George Savile, first Marquess of Halifax, eminent statesman and pamphleteer — Dryden's ‘Jotham of piercing wit and pregnant thought’ — was a prolific writer and correspondent and his papers have survived in considerable numbers.
