One of the wealthiest men in England, and Lord Lieutenant of the counties of Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. As one of Elizabeth I's most trusted courtiers, Shrewsbury was made the custodian of Mary, Queen of Scots in 1569;
