George Victor werd al op 14-jarige leeftijd vorst van Waldeck-Pyrmont na de dood van zijn vader in 1845. Vanwege zijn minderjarigheid nam zijn moeder tot 1852 de regering waar. Op 14 januari van dat jaar werd hij meerderjarig, maar hij weigerde de regering te aanvaarden zolang de democratische constitutie van 1849 nog van kracht was.
Helena was born at Arolsen, Waldeck and Pyrmont the third child and first and only daughter of Friedrich, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont (1865–1946), and his wife, Princess Bathildis of Schaumburg-Lippe (1873–1962), daughter of Wilhelm Karl August, Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe. She was a first cousin of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.

Georg Viktor’s wife Helena had been in ill-health for the last decade of her life. Alexander married on 3 May 1900 in Arolsen, Princess Elisabeth of Waldeck and Pyrmont (1873–1961), seventh child and youngest daughter of George Victor, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont and Princess Helena of Nassau. They had four children, nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and nineteen great-great-grandchildren:
