Georgiana McCrae. Georgiana Huntly McCrae (15 March 1804 – 24 May 1890) was an English-Australian painter and diarist. Early life. Born in London, McCrae was the illegitimate daughter of George Gordon, the Marquess of Huntly, son and heir to Alexander, 4th Duke of Gordon.

Before marriage to lawyer Andrew McCrae and immigration to Port Phillip, Georgiana Huntly McCrae (1804 – 1890) had been a professional portraitist, an unconventional career for a woman of her time.
Georgiana Huntly McCrae (1804-1890), artist and diarist, was born on 15 March 1804, in London, the natural daughter of George, marquis of Huntly, afterwards fifth Duke of Gordon ('Cock o' the North, ma Huntly braw'), and Jane, daughter of Ralph Graham of Rockmoor.

It is of Scottish origin and belongs to early settlers with a dramatic history. The story of Georgiana McCrae brings us into contact with a woman of great talent and fortitude, a person who spent only seven years on the peninsula, but who left a rich legacy there and in Melbourne.
The area around the Homestead was important to the local Bunurong tribe. The McCrae family had a good relationship with the local Aboriginal people, who would often camp nearby and even help with chores. Eliza was a Bunurong woman who taught Georgiana and her son George words from their language.
A prolific painter. McCrae produced a variety of work throughout her life. She received much acclaim for her miniatures and portraits.
