Gerald de Windsor, also known as Gerald FitzWalter, was the nobleman in charge of the Norman forces in Wales in the late 11th century. Notably, he was the progenitor of the FitzGerald dynasty, one of the most celebrated families of Ireland and Great Britain.

When Gerald De Windsor FitzWalter Lord Constable of Windsor Castle was born about 1070, in Carew, Pembrokeshire, Wales, his father, Walter FitzOtho de Windsor, was 35 and his mother, Beatrice de Offley, was 32. He married Nesta ferch Rhys De Gales in 1104, in Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wales. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 2 daughters.
King Henry then married Nest off to Gerald de Windsor, an Anglo-Norman baron much older than his new wife. Gerald was Constable of Pembroke Castle and ruled Nest’s father’s former kingdom for the Normans. Marrying Nest to Gerald was a shrewd political move, lending the Norman baron some sense of legitimacy in the eyes of the local Welsh people.
