Gilbert Marshal, 4th Earl of Pembroke (c. 1194/1207 – 27 June 1241) was the third son of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke and Countess Isabel, the daughter of Richard son of Gilbert, earl of Striguil. He was a member of the Marshal family.
27 de abr. de 2022 · Gilbert Marshal, 4th Earl of Pembroke (1194 - 27 June 1241) was the 3rd son of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke (1146-1219) and Isabella de Clare (1172-1240), the daughter of Richard de Clare. Gilbert acceded to the title of Earl of Pembroke on 11 June 1234, on the death of his elder brother Richard who had died childless.
His brother Gilbert (d. 1241), who became the 4th Earl, was a friend and ally of Richard, Earl of Cornwall. When another brother, Anselm, the 6th Earl, died in December 1245, the male descendants of the great Earl Marshal became extinct.
The Marshal family was a noble family of Anglo-Norman origins. Their name, Marshal, derives from the Frankish term for “a person who tended horses”. By 1066 the term was used for a position in royal and aristocratic households.
When Sir Gilbert Marshall 4th Earl of Pembroke was born in 1194, in Hertfordshire, England, his father, William Marshal 1st Earl of Pembroke, was 49 and his mother, Isabel de Clare, was 22. He married Margaret of Scotland on 1 August 1235, in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England.

At the time of King John's death, London and most of the channel ports were held by the French.
