In 2008 it was granted full university status and renamed Glyndŵr University (Prifysgol Glyndŵr) after Owain Glyndŵr, a fifteenth-century Welsh leader who was born near Wrexham and suggested the establishment of universities in Wales.

Wrexham Glyndŵr University started in 2008 and is named after a Welsh scholar and hero called Owain Glyndŵr. We are proud to be named after a man who cherished learning, loved his country, embraced an international outlook, and constantly demonstrated an inspiring and enterprising approach to life.

In 2008, NEWI gained university status and we decided on the name, Glyndwr University. This name came from Owain Glyndŵr, the last native-born Welshman to hold the title of Prince of Wales. We wanted our new institution to encapsulate the values of Owain Glyndwr; to be bold, enterprising, and open to all.
