Godert de Ginkel, 1st Earl of Athlone. Godard van Reede, 1st Earl of Athlone, Baron van Reede, Lord of Ginkel, [b] [1] born in the Netherlands as Baron Godard van Reede (14 June 1644 [a] – 11 February 1703), was a Dutch general who rose to prominence during the Williamite War in Ireland .
De Ginkell, Godert, Earl of Athlone, one of William III .'s ablest generals in the Irish War of 1689-'91, was born in Holland, of a noble family. A commander of proved ability, he accompanied William III. 's Dutch troops to England, and in March 1689 distinguished himself by the dispersion of the Scotch regiment that mutinied at Ipswich.
In spring 1691 he laid siege to Athlone, and two weeks later defeated the Irish Jacobite army in the bloody battle of Aughrim. He negotiated the surrender of Galway and the capitulation of Limerick later that year.
