He acquired Flanders by marrying Margaret I of Flanders in 1169 and Namur from his mother. He had several children, including Baldwin VI of Hainaut, Yolanda of Flanders, and Henry of Flanders. Baldwin V was buried at the monastery of Saint Waudru.
