Gotthard Kettler, último maestre de la Orden de Livonia, fue el primer duque de Curlandia. Gotthard Kettler, the last Master of the Livonian Order, became the first duke of Courland. Other members of the Order became the Couronian nobility, with the fiefdoms they had hitherto held becoming their estates. In all, Kettler received nearly one-third of the land in the new duchy.
Gotthard Kettler (also Ketteler; 2 February 1517 – 17 May 1587) was the last Master of the Livonian Order and the first Duke of Courland and Semigallia. Ferdinand Kettler (1 November 1655 – 4 May 1737) was the last Duke of Courland and Semigallia from the Kettler family.
