Gruffydd ap Rhys II (died 25 July 1201) was a prince of Deheubarth in south-west Wales . Lineage. He was the son of Rhys ap Gruffydd (The Lord Rhys) and grandson of Gruffydd ap Rhys. Gruffydd was the eldest son of Rhys ap Gruffydd by his wife Gwenllian, daughter of Madog ap Maredudd prince of Powys.
Rhys ap Gruffydd or ap Gruffudd (often anglicised to "Griffith"; c. 1132 – 28 April 1197) was the ruler of the kingdom of Deheubarth in south Wales from 1155 to 1197. Today, he is commonly known as The Lord Rhys, in Welsh Yr Arglwydd Rhys, although this title may have not been used in his lifetime. [2]

When Gruffydd II ap Rhys was born in 1157, in Carmarthenshire, Wales, his father, Rhys ap Gruffydd, Prince of Deheubarth, was 25 and his mother, Gwenllian ferch Madog of Powis, was 26. He married Matilda de Braose in 1189.
