  1. During the 12th century, Kidwelly was contested by Welsh princes and Norman lords, most notably in 1136 when the Welsh princess Gwenllian was killed in battle near it. Gwenllian's son, the Lord Rhys, enjoyed more success at Kidwelly, capturing and holding the castle until his death in 1197 - one of two occasions on which Kidwelly was held by the Welsh.

  2. Siân Gwenllian represents the Arfon constituency in the Welsh Parliament. She was elected for the first time in 2016, and was re-elected in 2021 with a higher percentage of the vote than any other candidate throughout Wales. She grew up in the village of y Felinheli, and received her secondary education in Bangor.

  3. Gwenllian was born in 1282 and was the daughter of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, also known as Llywelyn the Last, the first and last King of Wales. She was an only child, making her the heiress of the royal family of Aberfrraw. Her mother, Eleanor de Montfort, tragically died while giving birth to her.
