This article will look at William and Gwladus’s tomb in detail and consider whether new light can be thrown on some of the debates about its design. It is likely they met much earlier than 1228 as Joan's daughter, Gwladus Ddu, married Reginald de Braose, William's father, around 1215. Further Margaret, another of Joan and Llywelyn's daughters, was married to John de Braose, William's cousin, around 1219.

Philip ap Elidir Ddû was born in 1320, in Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales as the son of Sir Elidyr Ddû and Cecil ferch Sitsyllt. He married Gwladus Verch Dafydd Frax in 1357, in Carmarthenshire, Wales. They were the parents of at least 5 sons. He died in 1425, in his hometown, at the age of 105.
