The illustrations, designed between 1516 and 1518, were largely the work of Hans Burgkmair, with contributions by Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Springinklee, Albrecht Dürer, Leonhard Beck, and Hans Schäufelen. The project was incomplete as of Maximilian's death in 1519, and the first edition was not published until 1526.
