Taylor was married when they met, and their relationship was close but generally believed to be chaste during the years before her first husband died in 1849. The couple waited two years before marrying in 1851.

Nel 1835 si sposò col filosofo, fornendogli gran parte del materiale per il suo saggio intitolato The Subjection of Women (1869).
