Juli 2007 im Rahmen einer Kreisgebietsreform durch die Fusion aus den drei Landkreisen Halberstadt, Quedlinburg und Wernigerode sowie der Stadt Falkenstein/Harz entstanden. 13 Einheitsgemeinden und eine Verbandsgemeinde bilden heute eine starke kommunale Gemeinschaft.
