Moltke had grown up in Holstein, was educated in Copenhagen and served in the Danish army before, with the permission of the king, entering Prussian service in 1821, in the hope of further improving his skills, ostensibly for the benefit of Denmark.

In 1911, Hindenburg announced his retirement from the military.
