Colonel Sir Henry Abel Smith, KCMG, KCVO, DSO (8 March 1900 – 24 January 1993) was a British Army officer who served as Governor of Queensland, Australia. He married Lady May Cambridge, a niece of Queen Mary, consort of King George V .

Sir Henry Abel Smith (1900-1993), army officer and governor, was born on 8 March 1900 at Westminster, London, third of four children of Francis Abel Smith, banker, and his wife Madeline St Maur, née Seymour. He was tutored privately at home and, though a member of one of England’s oldest private-banking families, chose an army career.

Between 1958 and 1966, Sir Henry Abel Smith served as the governor of Queensland. Lady May accompanied him to Brisbane as vice-regal consort. They retired in 1975 to Barton Lodge at Winkfield in Berkshire, England. Lady May died in hospital one year after her husband.

Colonel Abel Henry Smith (6 December 1862 – 10 November 1930) was a British Conservative Party politician and an English landowner of the Smith banking family. Smith was the son of Abel Smith (1829–98), from whom he inherited the large estate of Woodhall Park, near Watton-at-Stone in Hertfordshire.
After a distinguished career as a soldier, in which he rose to the rank of colonel in the corps of household cavalry, Sir Henry Abel Smith came to Queensland as its Governor in 1958. During the two years he has held this high office Sir Henry has won the respect and affection of all sections of the community.
