DIED: 1596. Henry Carey by an unknown artist. In the collection of the estate of the 8th Earl of Berkeley. Son of Mary Boleyn, and cousin of Elizabeth I. Some claim that Henry was actually the son of Henry VIII, who was known to have had an affair with Mary, but the evidence for Henry Carey's paternity one way or the other is inconclusive.
His son later claimed that Henry Carey was the author of “God Save the King,” which became the British national anthem, but the claim was never proved. Until a 1930 edition of his poetry was published, Carey was reputed to be the illegitimate son of George Savile, 1st marquess of Halifax; it is now suggested that he was Savile’s illegitimate grandson.

When Lord Henry Carey was born on 4 March 1526, in Hengrave, Suffolk, England, his father, Sir William Carey, was 37 and his mother, Lady Mary Boleyn, was 27. He married Anne Morgan on 21 May 1545. They were the parents of at least 10 sons and 3 daughters. He registered for military service in 1569.
